So my lovely wife and I love Goodwill, specifically the outlet stores. A few weeks ago we scored this little record player cabinet for 5$ dollars that was destined for the landfill. It had some dings and scratches and cats had peed all over the cloth front but the frame was sound. The record player itself was a total loss which was fine because we wanted to drop a web radio in it.
Here it was when we got it:
I started by stripping the electronics out of it since they were completely shot. I also sanded the varnish just enough to roughen the surface so primer would adhere.
Then I scrubbed the rust off the screen from the cat urine.
Then a few coats of spray paint. I started with black primer then red on top.
The cloth was a waste as well so I picked up a cool looking print and stapled it in place, following the original pattern and staple points. I also repainted the screen using the black primer along with the hardware.
Then I distressed the paint with some steel wool.
And voila! It’s ready for an old android phone or tablet and some speakers.
This thing is solid wood and from an era when they built things with sturdiness in mind. It would have been a shame to let it go to waste and though we didn’t bring it back to its former glory, we did breath some new life into it.
